Transformative Workshops for Teens

These workshops are built for teens whose home life might look a little different — maybe you’re with relatives, an adoptive family, close family friends, or you’re more on your own and figuring things out as an emancipated teen. If your situation isn’t the traditional setup, you’ll fit right in here.

Everyone is welcome to join the workshops, and teens in non‑traditional living situations can also get mentoring if they want extra support.

Key Benefits of Our Workshops

Comprehensive Curriculum

Our workshops cover a wide range of topics including budgeting, job readiness, and emotional well-being, all while keeping things relevant to your situation.

Experienced Mentors

Participants benefit from the guidance of seasoned mentors who provide personalized support and real-world insights.

Interactive Learning

Engaging activities and hands-on experiences make learning practical skills enjoyable and memorable.

Supportive Community

Teens connect with peers and build a supportive network, fostering a sense of belonging and shared growth.

Teens today face more pressure, more information, and more choices than ever. These workshops give them a safe, supportive space to build confidence, practice real‑world skills, and connect with peers who are learning alongside them.

FAQ's

I may need assistance with getting to the workshops. Do you offer any transportation?

Yes!  We do.  If you need assistance getting to the workshop, please email us ahead of time.  We will have someone pick you up or pay for an Uber/Lyft to pick you up/drop you off.  We want you to be a part of the workshops and we will assist as much as we can to get you there.

How do I know I'm in foster care?

Foster care defination is living with someone that is not your biological Mom and Dad.  This includes living with grandparents, a teacher or friend, an aunt or uncle, been adopted by another family, and/or was in foster care and is now back living with bio parents.  If you still have questions about whether you qualify, please email us at info@thelighthousedenver.og.

At any time do I have to talk about my feelings or life situation?

Short answer is No.  You are in control of what you want to talk about.  If we work on a topic like relationships, there may be an element of personal story you may want to give, but this is completely optional.  We will have many stories from the mentors and adults in the room to handle no one talking, but you never know when your story can help others.

I go to school all day. I don't know if I want to do more school. Is this going to be like that?

No.  We know that you are learning and working and do not want more of the same.  We designed this program to be fun and engaging throughout.  You are in control of what workshops you want to go to and the mentors will be using real world examples to help illustrate the topics.  Some topics are drier than others, but we make it as fun as possible and you will be doing hands on to help with the school feel.

Mentorships

Who are the mentors?

Mentors are people within our community that have stepped up to volunteer their time and expertise about a subject or just want to help because they have been where you are.  These mentors come from a variety of backgrounds like business owners, trades people, teachers, etc.  Some struggled as a teen and want to let you know that you can do and acheive your goals because they did.

How can I get a mentor to help me?

Our mentors are specifically trained and want to give back to our mission to help ease the trauma of foster care which means our mentor program is only available to those who have been affected by foster care and are now on their own or emancipated (courts gave their rights to themselves instead of to a guardian).  We know how challenging it is to be in the system or have walked away from the system.  This means we know how much support you will need to become who you want to be and do what you want to do.  We are here to support you.

What will a Mentor work with me on?

That will be up to you to decide.  Working with a mentor, you will be able to come up with goals whether they are small or large, but it is up to your needs.  If you want help with getting a job, they will put together a timeline with you and follow up to get you to that goal.  If it is more serious like you need a place to live, they will work with you and our partner organizations to get you placed and secure.

You don't have to do this life alone.

At The Light House, we know what kind of struggles you may be facing after graduation, after emancipation, and even before you get to this place.  School is hard enough when you might be dealing with being behind or dealing with mental health issues.  We want to come alongside you and support you with a plan.  You can build a future instead of staying stuck in survival mode.  Our mentors are not only willing to help, but they really want to help you.  It’s hard to ask for help, but if you sign up for our program, you will be able to build a better life.  We will be there for you.

September 28th

This month we will be covering the topic of finances.  We will work with you on creating a budget, plan your money, and create a bank account.  You will walk away from this workshop feeling better about what money can do for you.  You can accomplish your money goals!  Speaker will be Brandee Heimerle.

October 26

This month we will focus on Cooking and Nutrition.  We will look at what food is good for you and why.  It is not the basics you learned in high school.  It will be a deep dive of  what is needed for your body to recover from stress, what vitamins should you be taking/not taking, and why does it make your body feel better?.  Also we will try to put together some struggle meals that are healthy for you, but don’t break the bank on cost.  You’ll love them and they’re good for you! Speaker will be (TBD).

November 23

For this month, we will be taking a look at Career paths and job placements.  Are you curious how to get that job you’ve always wanted?  What about how to act and dress like in an interview?  Maybe you want to discuss what pathways are there like trades, healthcare, community, government, etc.  Is collage the right path?   We will work on a plan with you to start this process.  If you already have a plan in place, you can ask questions or learn what kind of jobs work best when going to collage.  This night will be packed with future possiblities!  Speaker will be (TBD).

Do you want to become a mentor or a presentor?

We need mentors and presentors for our teens.  If you want to become one, please click the button below, fill out the form, and let us know!  We will reach out to you and get you plugged in ASAP!

Committment Levels

A Mentor needs to be committed to their mentee.  That means they need to show up/ meet with them at least once a week.  This can be a fast one to just check in or if they need more time, you can work with them to accomplish their goals.  A quick training will also help you be the most successful at being a mentor.  We will reach out to let you know the details.

A presentor can be someone in the community that is good at what they do and wants to teach teens how to do something.  We only require to be there for the one day they are presenting, but they will need to reach out to us beforehand to discuss needs for that night and to make sure your material is relevant and informative.

Either way you want to give back, we want to get you connected.  If you would like more information, you can reach out to our email at info@thelighthousedenver.org.

Do you want to help by donating to cover the costs of a mentor/lifeskills workshop for a teen?

Your donation of $25 will allow a teen to be able to participate, get supplies, food for the evening, and ongoing support through their mentors for one workshop.  They will be able to learn valuable skills that they will need in the future that they have ahead as well as someone to cheer them on, work through blocks, and educate on an one-on-one basis.  Make a difference in a teens life and sponsor a teen today!!
