Parents of Children with Trauma Community

Support Group Starts August 2026!

Feeling isolated in your parenting journey?

Looking for others who truly understand what it’s like to parent children who have experienced trauma?

Need a safe space where you can be honest about both the joys and challenges?

You don’t have to be struggling to participate or be involved too!  You may be able to help other parents with your knowledge.

Our Parent Support Community connects you with other foster, kinship, and adoptive parents who get it. Share experiences, exchange practical strategies, and build relationships with people who understand your reality. Leave each session feeling validated, equipped, and knowing you’re not alone on this journey.

All groups include free childcare, snacks, training hours for certification, and a welcoming environment where no question is too small and no challenge is too big to discuss. Virtual link is available if you cannot be in person!  Sign up to get the link.

Bio families are welcome too!

Handouts/Trainings

Have you missed one of our trainings or want to get one of the handouts in digital form?

Click on the link below and it will take you to our training materials page and you can download or print at your convenience.

All training material is offered free of charge and you do not need to be a part of the group to get.  At The Light House, we believe that education helps families and children in foster care and we know how challenging it is to be present at all meetings.  Things come up and we understand.  Please feel free to share this information with whomever would benefit as well.

We can’t wait to meet you at our next meeting and please feel free to reach out to us if you have a topic for our next training.  Email us at info@thelighthousedenver.org.

Week 1 – Building Your Support Network — Welcome to the new location and starting out our support topics with how to avoid isolation and create sustainable community care.  Light snacks and drinks will be provided and let us know if you need training hours for us to have ready for your visit.  We look forward to meeting you!

Week 2 -Working With Caseworkers & Agencies — This week we will be learning Communication strategies, documentation, and collaborative advocacy with the foster care system.  Many of you have started or have worked with these agencies before, but knowing what works and doesn’t work helps us all to navigate the system better and more effeciently.  Hope to see you there!

September 27

Week 3 – Supporting Siblings (Bio, Foster, Adoptive) — Who has their own kids that are struggling with living with foster placements?   We will tackle learning how to Manage jealousy, fairness, trauma responses, and maintaining connection.  It is hard enough parenting kids with trauma, but add your own kids’ issues with the new kids in the mix and you have a recipe to create disaster.  If you have navigated this before and know some great techniques for parenting both kinds of kids, please bring your insight to our meeting too!  Other parents will want to hear what you have to say!

October 11

Week 4 – Collaborative Problem Solving —When we have children that have been through something major, they tend to get stuck when it comes to problem solving.  Our topic today will be a structured method for reducing power struggles and building trust with our kids.  Power struggles arise when we try to control things and the kids feel like they need to control as well.  Chaos is hard on a family.  Let’s see if we can figure out a way of navigating these.

October 25

Week 5 – Understanding Survival Brain Responses — How many times do you notice your child going from zero to sixty on something that shouldn’t have?  Did feel like your on eggshells around them; afraid to set them off? Let’s learn about Fight/flight/freeze/fawn patterns, how they show up in daily life, and how parents can respond without escalating.  There are ways you can learn to help them and yourself navigate the waters of the Survival Brain.

November 8

Week 6- Youth Rights & Self‑Advocacy — Do you have teens and not sure how to help them work through the system?  You see them constantly shutting down and not trying or exploding with anger at frustration with their situation and/or the systsem.  Help them by empowering teens to speak up for themselves in safe, appropriate ways.  They can have a voice in foster care.

November 22

Week 6 – Preparing for Transitions & Placement Changes — Have you ever decided to do a break between placements to try to work through the emotions, or get another child right away to keep things going because it felt better?  Maybe trying to have a plan for your emotional preparation, goodbye rituals, and supporting kids through uncertainty.  This may not only alleviate what you are going through, but also what the kids are feeling when they have to transition.  Especially if it is a bad transition, it can affect things for the whole family’s future.

December 6

Week 8 – Sensory Needs & Regulation — Have you been curious about how senses are affected by trauma?  What about what works and doesn’t work with toys or sensory products? Let’s deep dive into how sensory processing differences show up and how to build a sensory‑friendly home.  You may find out what works for not only the child, but you as well!
